Skateland by Anthony Burns – Buy your ticket NOW
”Won’t you take me to funky town, won’t you take me to funky town… ” It’s 1983 in a small town in Texas. We enter Skateland, the local roller rink, while one of disco’s last stands ”funky town” is being played on high volume. A time of roller-skates, slush ice and glam disco tunes is coming to an end.
To Ritchie Wheeler, the 19-year-old manager of Skateland, it is an end of an era. Even though Ritchie is desperately trying to hold on to his days of freedom, the imminent closing of Skateland and his parent’s inevitable divorce force him closer to adulthood.
Skateland is the American journalist, screenwriter and director Anthony Burns’ first feature film. It is a skillfully executed first film that leaves a promise for future achievements, a well composed teenage drama with a purpose, portraying the confusing gap between youth and adulthood. Since Skateland premiered, critics have compared it to classics such as American Graffiti and The Last Picture Show.
